Danni has made this lovely queen size quilt as a wedding present for a good friend's son!! Wow what a gift!! It's simplicity is just stunning & tho' the fabrics do not show up really well in the photos they are a lovely navy blue background with a floral print on them in red/rusts etc. The floral motif in the plain white on white painted fabric is actually mimicking the flower in the floral border fabric and is used in the chains also. I was really pleased with this quilt as it was pieced so perfectly that it came out perfect! I will hopefully remember this floral motif in my ideas book for future quilts as well.

Julie's Baltimore is completely by hand needle turned! Julie is a perfectionist and has handed over a huge number of quilts for me to quilt over the last 4 years. This one was a Block of the Month from Toowoomba, Qld a few years ago & finally finished. After seeing my sister's quilt, Daisy Dance she decided she would also like the McTavishing background filler on hers. I used Aurifil 50wt natural thread to lessen the heavy effect of the dense background filler. Batting used is Hobbs Heirloom cotton 80/20%.

Pat's Pinwheels is a fresh purple quilt made for a friend to brighten up her room. We chose a total feather theme on this quilt to soften the angular piecing. The feathered square circles in the plain blocks have a double spine that is perfect and made using the circle lord. Then I have freehanded the feathers around them. The pinwheel blocks were really fun to do totally freehand. All blocks are ditched and the outer border has a undulating feather vine on it. Matilda's Own wool wadding was used in this quilt which is lovely to work with and to sleep under!

Pansy Spray is actually my own quilt that was made quickly for a workshop that I teach called Log Cabin Fun - Wall hanging.  All the girls in the workshop had a wonderful time & some have already started on their appliqués only one week after the workshop!!  The centre appliqués have been ironed on with fusible web, then a tiny satin stitch around them and the border sprays have been painted on with pigmented ink. I only recently learned this technique in a workshop by Pam Holland where I was the participant for a change! The painted pansies and the appliqué pansies have been trapuntoed, using water soluble thread and cutting away the batting. It has then been layered with Hobbs Heirloom cotton and heavily quilted with McTavishing background filler and crosshatching in the pieced triangles. The log cabin logs have been ditch stitched and also split down the middle to maintain density of quilting over the quilt & hopefully to avoid any distortion. Thread used was bottom line in the bobbin and Rasant cotton covered poly in the top.

This huge 70 sqft quilt was made by Sylvia for one of her 5 granddaughters! It is based on a workshop utilising William Morris appliqué designs taught by Michelle Hill. Sylvia chose to have all the background McTavished with a separate treatment for the final plain muslin border. In this border I utilised my swag rulers to create elegant swags with 1/2" straight lines to the final dark framing border. On the inside of the swags is more McTavishing. All blocks & borders were also ditched .

Lorraine's semi wholecloth.jpg (396220 bytes)lorraines semi wholecloth1.jpg (406695 bytes)Lorraines semi wholecloth2.jpg (427721 bytes)

Lorraine found a lovely picture in an old magazine of a simple quilt made of two fabrics which had 'puffy' wadding that looked cuddly & warm. This is her rendition with a yellow/white plaid centre fabric that was a linen type fabric (thankfully the plaid was perfectly square so I could follow the squares for the crosshatching!) The 19" borders were a 100% cotton damask fabric, which was also quite thick. I spent nearly 5 hours marking all the border curling Amish feather design using my circle templates and a June Tailor feather template to get them as perfect & uniform as possible. Also the swags were pre-marked as well. I quilted this quilt without turning and did the crosshatching as I went also. I had to extend the crosshatching into the feathers in the outer border. This was done after the feathers had been stitched & then the straight lines marked with a blue washout pen as I went. Hobbs Polydown batting was used to simulate the 'puffy' look in the photo. The customer did not want any dense quilting, therefore this batting was chosen to create the texture required.

Lorraine had purchased 6 largish rectangles of lovely Japanese fabrics & came up with simply piecing them together with sashing strips. To enhance the fabrics and not overpower their beauty we decided on the traditional Baptist fan design over this quilt, using a lovely Aurilux variegated thread. The Baptist fans were spaced 1 1/2" apart and were completed accurately & quickly using my Circle Lord attachment. We are very pleased with the result!!

Grans quilt.jpg (397900 bytes)

'Gran's High Tea' is actually an old embroidered tablecloth that I used to practise/learn the cut-away trapunto technique using water soluble thread! It's overall impact is great, but I certainly learned a LOT whilst making this tablecloth into a quilt. I improved towards the end & hopefully will quilt it better/more accurately next time....

Dreden plate1.JPG (68269 bytes)Dresden plate.JPG (69018 bytes)

Rhonda's dresden plates is a large quilt of 105" square. It has 64 plates on it and I had to quilt them all with a petal design using the piecing as my guideline. In between there are 49 full feather circle wreaths and then all the half & quarter feathered wreaths along the sides. The background is stippled to pop the designs. I used Superior Bottom Line thread in taupe colour to create a calming, soothing texture over the lavender homespun background. I was really pleased to finish this quilt as it was so large but thrilled with the result once finished!

Tillys spew rug.jpg (72409 bytes)

'Tilly's Spew Rug'      This is a polar fleece rug made for my newest niece, Matilda May!! It has polar fleece top & bottom and no wadding in between. I used a freehand design from Jamie Wallen/Nichole Webb's  book (No Boundaries), called Flurry of Angels. It goes really quickly & looks stunning - thanks guys for your inspiration!!

Blues Nuveau.jpg (60461 bytes)

'Blues Nuveau' is an interesting quilt made by my sister, Helen, for a friend's wedding. Being a little more contemporary, I chose to use the nuveau feathers in conjunction with the flurry of angels design over this one. Again it went quickly but looks very effective!
