This quilt by Margaret, is a BOM from New Zealand, but looks to be a Canadian pattern! In lovely Autumn tones it came up a real treat!! I mimicked the pieced maple leaf by drawing it onto freezer paper and then ironing it onto the quilt top whilst it was loaded on the machine to stitch around. Then the stylised flowing maple leaf design in the centre of it worked really well inside these and the pieced blocks. Lots of straight lines in the fan blocks and ditching of the appliqués.
Fran's Kaleidoscope quilt was a challenge at first with all the circles. I ended up completing this one with my new Circle Lord, which made the whole process very satisfying in the end. The borders are all ditched and the green border has a veined leaf vine running through it. The final two pink borders has a very large & open all over rose vine & leaf design to compliment the fabric used. This design needed to be quite open to maintain the consistency of the quilting over the whole quilt top.
"Love Letters", by Hugs'n'Kisses, is a gorgeous quilt made from 12 'Love letter' stitcheries designed by Helen Stubbings of Hugs'n'kisses. If you purchase the whole set of patterns then the pattern for the quilt is included for free...... I used Hobbs Polydown wadding in this quilt to create some 'puffiness' to accentuate the simple swags in the borders. The swags were simply made with my DWR Arcs & Circles templates by finding the arc required and placing some 1/4" masking tape across the template to guide me on where to place them on the seam line of the border. Starting from the centre of each border I stitched the centre scallop then worked out to the corners. The corners were made up as I got to them and being a square quilt ended up all the same. the pink border was ditched and the stitcheries echoed 1/4" inside the block. All the background was then a rose/leaf vine all over design that was not too dense to blend the fabrics together and highlight the stitcheries.
Sylvia's Baltimore is a very large quilt made by a wonderful lady who has made quilts for all her granddaughters! This one has a switchback leafy vine in the outer borders and all the appliqué blocks have the peacock feather design in the background. All the sashings were ditched as well. Wadding chosen was Matilda's wool wadding for warmth and drapability.
Sylvia's Storm at Sea is another large quilt. She must have a huge stash of blue fabrics! We chose concentric circles using my Circle Lord device over the storm at sea blocks, which are all friendship blocks made & signed by all the members of her quilting group. The outer border was marked with chalk with a large angular triangle design alternated with a baptist fan arc design. This was to accentuate both the geometric lines and the false impression of circles that the storm at sea pattern evokes. Matilda's wool wadding was again used with this quilt.
This quilt made by Pip, was from an American magazine. It is a lovely county style with plenty of challenges in piecing and appliqué. All the 2" filler/joiner squares have been crosshatched. The background to all the blocks have been densely quilted with a feather/swirl meander which is very tiny. The pieced blocks all have a different treatment using continuous curves using my CC Triarcs, 1/4" outlining and stitching in the ditch using the SID Guide. There is a leafy undulating vine border going around the final border.
Anne made this quilt from an Australian designer - Colleen Archbold - pattern with some minor variations to make it fit her own bed. It is a very large quilt making good use of fabric patterns in the borders. The patterned borders have been ditch stitched along seam lines as well as along the pattern design lines approx 1/2" apart. The outer border will be scalloped so the motifs are stitched to compliment the final scallops by Anne, who chalked them in for me to give me a guide. The feather motifs are freehand from one of Pam Clarke's Designs with Lines books. The feather in the setting triangles are also freehand with only the spine and centre figure 8 feathers chalked in. The stars border has Continuous curves in the star points and a square on point stitched in the centre. The thread colours have been changed to match each star. Wadding used was Mini Jumbuck (Australian product) which is 60/40% wool/poly. Nice weight and very easy to quilt with.
